Quick answer
The easiest way to have data at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is to install a Thailand eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. You skip the SIM counters in arrivals and can open Grab, maps, or the Airport Rail Link route before you leave the terminal.
Should I buy a SIM at Suvarnabhumi or an eSIM before I fly?
SIM counters sit in the arrivals hall after baggage claim. They work, but after a long-haul flight you queue, show your passport, and wait while staff swap the SIM. With an eSIM bought before the trip, the line is already on your phone when the plane lands.
An eSIM also keeps your home SIM in the phone. Bank one-time codes and WhatsApp stay on your usual number while the Thailand line handles mobile data.
When should I install the eSIM?
Install it the day before you fly, on home or hotel Wi-Fi. The QR code arrives by email after payment and also stays on your order page. Leave the new line switched off for data until you are on the ground in Thailand.
- 1Before the flight: scan the QR on Wi-Fi and label the line “Thailand”.
- 2On landing: turn off airplane mode.
- 3Set the Thailand line as your mobile data line.
- 4Open a map before you walk to immigration, so you know the eSIM is working.
How do I get from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok?
The Airport Rail Link (ARL) leaves from the basement level, below arrivals on Level 2 and the taxi level on Level 1. It runs to Phaya Thai, where it meets the BTS Skytrain, in about 26 to 30 minutes. Fares go up to 45 baht, and since November 2025 you can tap a contactless bank card at the gates. Trains run from about 05:30 to midnight.
Public metered taxis leave from Level 1. Grab and Bolt also pick up at the airport; the app shows the meeting point, which is why it helps to have data before you leave the arrivals hall.
What if I forgot to install the eSIM before the flight?
Connect to the airport’s free Wi-Fi and open the email or your order page. You need the QR code on a second screen to scan it, or you can use the manual install code shown under the QR. Install the eSIM, then switch mobile data to the Thailand line.
Frequently asked questions
Is there free Wi-Fi at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
+
Yes. The terminal has free public Wi-Fi, which is enough to open your QR email and install the eSIM if you did not do it at home.
Do I need data roaming on at Suvarnabhumi?
+
Not for this eSIM. It runs on the local True–DTAC network, so you only need to turn the Thailand line on and select it for mobile data. Keep roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges from your carrier.
Can I use the eSIM for the Thailand Digital Arrival Card?
+
You should submit the TDAC online before you fly, within the three days before arrival. If you still need to do it on arrival, the eSIM gives you data to open the official site, tdac.immigration.go.th.
